"Weaponizing the Senses: Imperial Democracy on the Line"
Ann Stoler, Willy Brandt Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology and Historical Studies at The New School for Social Research, and director of the Institute for Critical Social Inquiry, will present the 2021 John Lax Memorial Lecture on Thursday, November 4 at 4:30pm Gamble Auditorium (Art Building, Mount Holyoke College).
From Professor Stoler: “Whether hailed as the ‘democratization of war’ or the ‘democratization of fear’, the politics of sentiment saturates the making of the conditions of inequality on which imperial democracies thrive. Here I look at what I call the ‘politicality’ of these senses, the potentials and possibilities of those sensibilities, sentiments, and sensory landscapes that can produce and protect the distinctions that matter to governance in its minute and most capacious registers.”
