About this Event
5 Lower Lake Road, South Hadley, MA
An 800 ft. deep well was drilled at the north end of campus in order to learn more about the rocks that will host the geothermal well field. Sampling during the drilling and subsequent geophysics of the borehole, afforded the opportunity to learn more about the Jurassic lake that once existed in the valley.
This lake existed for millions of years and the rocks contain evidence of repeated rising and falling lake levels. Bore hole tests demonstrate that these rocks will be a sustainable source of heat in the winter and cooling in the summer allowing the College to significantly reduce it's carbon footprint.
Al Werner, professor of geology.
