Professor Renzo Aroni Sulca, NYU is a Quechua musician, scholar and historian whose focus is on Latin America, primarily the Andean region. He will join us virtually to discuss how hip hop has spread into indigenous regions and languages, such as Quechua.

From the South Bronx, where it was born in 1973, to the Andes, artists are reconfiguring local and diasporic identities and traditions through rap.

This talk explores poetics within underground, conscious, feminist, queer, and trans movements, as well as the inclusive futures they envision.

With a focus on artists like Renata Flores, Celinda Enríquez, Kachikachicha and others to reflect on how indigenous poetry and music become a means to reclaim ancestral language, new forms of indigeneity, and demands for social, environmental, and gender justice.
