Panel 13: Architecture in Context

Our panel has architecture in context in different industries, applying the knowledge of architecture through aerospace manufacturing, construction, and real-life architectural projects. We grounded our classroom experience of architecture in the working world and sought to understand the practical applications of architecture. Among our projects, two of our projects include working in an architectural firm, assisting with real-life projects using architectural softwares. Another project was interning at a crew program, helping them with constructing a house along a lake for the program. Additionally, one of us interned at a company as a server administration intern, assisting with internal services by creating applications and modeling aerospace manufacturing. In all of our projects, architecture is integral to the design process and the creativity involved.

Title: Exploring Architecture in Tokyo
This summer, I interned at three architectural firms in Tokyo, where I worked on both real-life and hypothetical projects. Throughout the internships, I contributed to concept development, designing plans, creating models, using Vectorworks for editing, attending client meetings, selecting materials, and conducting site inspections. I also collaborated with construction workers, which helped me understand the interdisciplinary nature of architecture and the necessity of clear communication. Key lessons I took away included the importance of effectively presenting work to clients and the valuable process of transforming plans into models, highlighting the critical role of execution in bringing designs to life.

Title: Beyond Buildings: The Role of Architecture in Aerospace
Architectural practice typically refers to the process of designing a building. However, the word “architecture" and its skills encompass far more than the three most commonly known fields of architecture, construction, and engineering. The design and construction of any structure, from the entirety of the Empire State Building to the smallest component of an airplane, requires an architect. We will explore the relevance of architecture in the supply chain and aerospace industry through the lens of a manufacturer, opening up the world of architecture beyond its traditional meaning.

Title: Architecture Internship
In this presentation, Cate shares her architecture internship experience. She spent the summer working at Studio Cooke John, an architecture and design studio based in Montclair, New Jersey.
