Epigenetic remodeling in the nucleus accumbens following cocaine self-administration

Alberto Lopez, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Fellow, Calipari lab

Department of Pharmacology

Vanderbilt University

My research focuses on how molecular adaptations caused by drugs of abuse generate long-lasting changes in neural circuit function. Specifically, epigenetic mechanisms provide a unique avenue in characterizing how drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, hijack circuit-specific neural activity to drive drug-seeking behaviors. The ultimate goal of my research is to use these epigenetic mechanisms to identify mechanistic links between specific gene targets and drug-induced changes in neural function.
