Class of 1996 Unlearning: True Stories of False Narratives

This is a past event.

A reflective creative writing workshop on personal revision.

In this workshop, Mount Holyoke siblings will explore their own personal stories by examining a value, belief or practice that they’ve had to unlearn. Maybe it’s your definition of success. Your expectations of middle age, or parenthood, or marriage. Maybe you’re working at the knots that connect you to privilege or struggling to uproot internalized racism. What beliefs about your body or your gender have you let go of? What thought patterns are you trying to unlearn but can’t quite shake? We are each our own author and witness to one another.

Participants will have the opportunity to continue with the creative writing piece after Reunion, shaping it for a virtual reading event to be held this fall. What you’ll need: your preferred writing tools (pencil and paper, pen and ink, keyboard and screen — the choice is yours); a curious mind; a willingness to reflect. What you won’t need: experience with creative writing.

Liz Webber Rose-Cohen ’96 is a creative nonfiction writer who wishes she had known about the transformative power of revision back when she was at MHC, mistaking first drafts for final copies and procrastination for the creative process. These days she holds an MFA in creative nonfiction writing, an M.S. in adult education, and develops communications for a community health system in Ohio. She’s also a mom who wishes parenting was as easy as it looked from the outside.

Leslie Ito ’96 is executive director at Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, California, a leading independent institution for contemporary art exhibitions and community arts education. Leslie is an arts executive with more than 20 years of leadership and fundraising expertise. Ito's work toward cultural "bridge-building" and advocacy underscores her deep commitment to arts equity and access for all people.
