Building Websites and Communities

This summer, I worked as a Web and Tech Intern for the National Stem Honor Society (NSTEM), a company whose mission is to provide nationwide access to STEM education by starting chapters in K-12 schools and universities. This is a mostly intern-run company with internship opportunities in fields ranging from computer science, video production, business management, and more. I initially joined the company to work on redesigning their website, but I quickly became the Director of the Web & Tech Department and helped manage the website redesign. I learned how to apply creative thinking and user experience principles towards building a website designed to grow the STEM community nationwide. As a project manager and director, I also learned how to foster a sense of community amongst the 40+ people that I worked with.

Sustainability Through the Lens of Social Media

We are living in a time where we are able to use social media as a tool for greatness and where climate change is one of the greatest threats to humanity. During my internship, I used social media to promote sustainability. In this presentation, I will talk about how social media can be used to create change in our society, and the audience will be able to take away an understanding of what it means to be a sustainability business.

A Local Interest Story: Print and Broadcast Media on the Small Scale

This summer, I interned for The Stow/Bolton Independent, my hometown newspaper, and Stow TV, the local cable access channel. Together, they are the main source of regional information for a community of approximately 7,300 people. During my internship, I covered many kinds of local events, from graduations to festivals to Memorial Day services. I photographed and wrote articles for the Independent, and for Stow TV I recorded footage and edited it into finished television programs. My work this summer offered me a glimpse into the crucial role that media can play in forging strong community ties. If you’re curious about working in print journalism or public broadcasting, how they can be used to make a positive impact on the communities that rely on them, or even if you’re just curious about what goes into making a newspaper or a TV program, then this talk is for you.
