The Department of Sociology & Anthropology presents “Democracy on the Ground: Local Politics in Latin America's Left Turn,” a book talk by Gabriel Hetland in conversation with Robert Samet, Associate Professor of Anthroplogy, Director of Latin American and  Carribbean Studies at Union College.

Dr. Hetland’s talk will be based on his first book, “Democracy on the Ground: Local Politics in Latin America's Left Turn,” which examines a classic question: what are the limits of democracy, and under what conditions can they be expanded? The book challenges the widely held view that democracy is possible only when it is “safe” for elites.

Cosponsored by: The McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives, the Department of Politics, the Department of International Relations and the Department of Spanish, Latina/o and Latin American Studies.
