Through our work this summer we engaged with various communities to foster creativity through the arts and education, with special attention paid to social justice work. Delian Ligon completed a teaching fellowship with Generation Teach, which involved working with seventh grade students to develop figurative language skills and interrogate diverse texts. Arianna Ortiz Tencio was an events intern at Baby2Baby, a non-profit in Los Angeles focused on providing the essentials for children living in poverty nationwide. Ciera LeCiel was an Intern at Nurturing Roots Farm an Urban Farm in Seattle, WA with an emphasis on community building, Black empowerment, and food sovereignty. Sydney Zobel interned with Molly Cantor, a local ceramicist, helping her with her own work and the general upkeep of the community studio as well as teaching kids the art of ceramics. Collectively we explored how social justice, the arts, and education serve as invaluable tools to facilitate community building and self expression through creativity.
