About this Event
This session was previously recorded. Watch the video.
In the United States, between 1882 and 1927 - there were 4,951 documented lynchings. About a third of those killed were white often on the West Coast, the predominant numbers indicate that victims were African American and of the total number - 92 of the victims were women.
Ida B. Wells-Barnett lost one of her close personal friends to a violent lynching after he opened a grocery store in Memphis that was in competition with a local store owned by a business man who was white. Outraged, Wells-Barnett devoted her life as an investigative journalist to challenging these injustices. As we continue to reflect on the #1619Project as a campus community, a better understanding of the history of lynchings and the Black woman who waged war against them is important to reflect upon. Scholar, Dr. Paula Giddings will join us to discuss Ida B. Wells-Barnett as the author of Ida: A Sword Among Lions.
