Continuing its scholarly tradition of unearthing rare gems of the symphonic literature, the Mount Holyoke Symphony Orchestra will present Thomas de Hartmann’s Piano Concerto in its first public performance of more than 70 years. The work is juxtaposed with the contemporaneous Third Piano Concerto by Sergei Rachmaninoff.
In so doing, the program explores the tumultuous epoch that was the beginning of the Twentieth Century, where both immigrant composers navigated the end of Tsarist Russia, interwar tumult, two world wars, new lives in America in parallel epic journeys.
We are joined by the pre-eminent scholar of the music of Thomas de Hartmann, Elan Sicroff, as our first soloist on the piano, and Han Chen, praised by the New York Times for his “graceful touch... rhythmic precision... hypnotic charm”.
