Anthropologist Horacio Espinosa will join us virtually to discuss his ethnographic research on various tianguis (street markets) in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Tianguis (from the Nahuatl 'tianquiztli') are street markets that date back to pre-Hispanic times and to this day prevail as the main form of popular commerce in Mexico, especially in urban settings.

Dr. Espinosa's talk (in Spanish) will delve into issues related to the informal economy, urban control, the appropriation of public space by the most disadvantaged sectors of society, popular culture and the defense of territory.
