Mark Hauber, Ph.D. Professor,  University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Birds are some of the best studied models of biparental care, yet 1% of bird species build no nests, incubate no eggs, and feed no chicks. These brood parasitic birds forego all costs of reproduction by laying their eggs into other species' nests. How brood parasitic birds recognize their own species (without parental referents) and whether and how hosts recognize the parasitic eggs in the nest are the topics of my talk.
