Documentary Screening

We will watch the critically acclaimed documentary on Kashmir— Jashn-e Azadi, How We Celebrate Freedom—by well-known filmmaker and writer Sanjay Kak on October 6.

The political situation in Kashmir over the last few years has been very grim. Especially since 2019, when the Indian State unilaterally abrogated disputed Kashmir's leftover autonomous status, there has been an intensification of widespread crackdown on political dissent and smothering of freedom of press. As such, the conversation about Kashmir and screening of Jashn-e Azadi—which evocatively explores the meanings and limits of freedom in the heavily militarized region—is timely and critical.

The film screening is a part of course 'HIST-239-CR01 Costs of Resistance: History Through Film.' The screening is open to the wider MHC community. All are welcome to attend.

This film screening is co-sponsored by the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives and the departments of Film, Media, Theater, International Relations and Asian Studies.

Join us again for a Conversation with Sanjay Kak.
