Conversation with filmmaker and writer Sanjay Kak about his critically acclaimed documentary on Kashmir Jashn-e Azadi, How We Celebrate Freedom.

The political situation in Kashmir over the last few years has been very grim. Especially since 2019, when the Indian State unilaterally abrogated disputed Kashmir's leftover autonomous status, there has been an intensification of widespread crackdown on political dissent and smothering of freedom of press. As such, the conversation about Kashmir through Sanjay Kak's documentary Jashn-e Azadi—which evocatively explores the meanings and limits of freedom in the heavily militarized region—is timely and critical.
