Networking in the Film Industry
This past summer Juliana had the opportunity to work as a Development Intern at Westward Productions. In order to secure this position, Juliana utilized a plethora of Mount Holyoke resources, including the Career Development Center (CDC), The Gates, and the MHC Alumni network. Juliana began her process early fall semester, making weekly appointments with the CDC to finalize her application materials. Later during winter break, Juliana used her free time to reach out to alumni through the Gates. All of this culminated in multiple internship offers, allowing Juliana to choose her preferred path.

Working in Independent Film Production
My presentation will highlight my experience as a Film Production Intern and will offer listeners some insight into the many possible routes they can take to gain experience in the film industry. I will talk about how I used my already existing network from my career in acting, and how I applied the skills I learned in my video production classes at Mount Holyoke to build a network that lends to my aspirations as an actor and film maker.

Working in a magazine as photographer/editor
I worked at a magazine over the summer, where I had the opportunity to edit photos, art, poetry and consolidate it into an online print format. I brainstormed ideas, and actualized these into specific gestures and setups. The theme of my work was ‘breaking down social norms’ and ‘uplifting people’s voices’. I produced these ideas by working with models, managing equipment and exploring during shooting. Later on, I got the chance to select and edit photos as well. I found the process of turning ideas into reality, or ‘expressive art’, really intriguing. The process of going through the photos to find the best one created ways to be inspired at every step. I got this opportunity through a college alum, and created lasting connections with photographers. I learned that working in media and creation involves a lot of networking and fostering relationships.
