About this Event
Join us for a conversation between Author Nia King and Professor Niamh Timmons.
Nia King is a queer mixed-race (Black, Lebanese, Hungarian Jewish) journalist with 20 years of experience with DIY media-making. She started out as a zinester, then moved into web comics, blogging, short films, podcasting, and eventually self-publishing books. She is best-known for her podcast, We Want the Airwaves, and her three-volume book series, Queer & Trans Artists of Color: Stories of Some of Our Lives. We Want the Airwaves, started in 2013, is one of the oldest and longest-running podcasts for and by queer people of color. Nia started podcasting before the podcast boom (Serial, NPR, etc.) and was one of the first women of color in the podcasting space. She has interviewed over 100 queer and trans artists of color trying to learn if it's possible to make art and make rent without compromising your values.
Cosponsored by the Weissman Center for Leadership, the Departments of Critical Race and Political Economy, English and Gender Studies, and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
