About this Event
Join the Mount Holyoke Symphony Orchestra as we journey through two musical postcards from the classical and romantic era. First, hear Felix Mendelssohn's hauntingly beautiful Hebrides Overture. Originally titled The Lonely Island, Mendelssohn began the piece while on an excursion to the Scottish island of Staffa. After our return from the lonely island, we hear Haydn's final symphony, "The London Symphony", written by the Austrian while he was living abroad in England. In addition to all the influence of London, Haydn also incorporates "Oj Jelena", a ballad sung by Croatians living in Eisenstadt when Haydn made his home there - a true musical postcard!
