About this Event
Smillie will discuss her art practice as grounded in a trans-feminist politic, her exploration of the visual vocabulary of protest signage and the nuances found in a poetics of protest. She will discuss her work’s interplay and wrestle between the individual and the group. The talk will further explore how the “white cube” might be leveraged as a site to propel social change, while also grappling with the constrictions and contradictions imposed by institutions that seek to contain radical potential.
Cosponsored by Weissman Center for Leadership, MHC Department of Gender Studies, MHC Department of Art Studio, MHC Diversity Equity Inclusion, MHC Division of Student Life & Purington Fund, 5C Queer, trans sexuality studies certificate.
