Smillie will discuss her art practice as grounded in a trans-feminist politic, her exploration of the visual vocabulary of protest signage and the nuances found in a poetics of protest. She will discuss her work’s interplay and wrestle between the individual and the group. The talk will further explore how the “white cube” might be leveraged as a site to propel social change, while also grappling with the constrictions and contradictions imposed by institutions that seek to contain radical potential.
