Paradis Symposium

Reframing the Gaze: Maria Theresia Paradis, Blind Musicians, and Musical Culture before and after Braille (November 22-23, 2024)

In honor of the bicentenary of the blind Viennese pianist, composer, and educator Maria Theresia Paradis (1759-1824), this interdisciplinary symposium features two keynote speakers and a dozen international scholars discussing various aspects of Paradis’s life, works, worlds, and impact. Musical events include two recitals of music by and about Paradis, and a reconstruction of one of her Vienna school concerts from the 1810s, featuring the modern-day world premiere of an excerpt from her recently rediscovered cantata Das Wiedersehen.

The symposium features a hands-on, accessible exhibition of archival texts, images, and tools related to blind musicians and music education of the blind — including a modern-day replica of a composing board invented for Paradis, designed and built at Fimbel Maker and Innovation Lab.

The symposium will be held both in person and online.

Registration is free. For full program and registration information, see the event pages or visit our website.
